Meghan Markle’s Go-To Flats Are Made of Recycled Plastic

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Australia itinerary today focused on the environment—the couple spent their day learning about the sustainability programs integrated into Albert Park Primary School and meeting with student “Sustainability Leaders and Waste Warriors,” participating in a beach clean-up with volunteer community organization Beach Patrol, and paying a visit to the Royal Botanic Gardens. But there was another, more subtle, eco-conscious element to the day: Markle’s Rothy’s flats.

For their visit to the beach, the Duchess swapped out her navy Manolo Blahnik pumps for a pair of black pointy-toe flats by San Francisco-based label Rothy’s that are made out of recycled plastic. According to Business Insider, the “upper knits of the shoes are made from 100% post-consumer plastic water bottles, which are hot washed, sterilized, then fused into a fibre that is then knit into yarn.”

The sustainable company has repurposed 12 million water bottles so far, and is clearly a favourite of Markle’s because she also slipped into them a couple of days ago in Sydney. Halfway through a very busy day of events, the mom-to-be swapped her nude Stuart Weitzman pumps for the Rothy’s flats. Meghan Markle-approved, high on comfort, and good for the environment? Talk about a win-win-win.
